Football Free Broadcast Image Quality

High-Definition

High-definition broadcasts are those that use a higher number of scanning lines than standard definition to produce a sharper image. Examples of HD images include terrestrial or direct satellite broadcast, digital cable, IPTV, Blu-ray video disc (BD), digital cameras and Internet downloads.

This season, the free NFL broadcast on Fox’s streaming service, Prime Video, will be produced and delivered in native HDR for the first time. This is a significant improvement in image quality over last year’s offering.

In addition to the enhanced picture quality, this season’s game production and delivery will also feature new data visualizations using NFL Next-Gen Stats, AI/ML, and custom logic that will power X-Ray, Rapid Recaps, Fourth Down Territory, Field Goal Target Zone, Prime Targets and Defensive Alerts. High-Resolution

Sometimes referred to as hi-res or high resolution, a high-resolution image has a higher number of pixels per inch (PPI). This increases the amount of visual information in the picture, which helps it look sharper and more distinct.

Pixels are the building blocks of all images. They’re little squares of color that create the shapes and details of a photo or video. You can see them if you zoom in closely or try to enlarge an image beyond its original size.

Amazon Prime will stream all Thursday Night Football games in HDR this season for the first time. High-Dynamic-Range

With this season’s debut, Prime Video is the only streaming service to offer end-to-end HDR for TNF broadcasts. This is a big deal, as HDR can significantly improve contrast and color on your TV’s display.

While Amazon isn’t revealing exactly which HDR format it’s using, it’s likely a variant of one of the four common HDR standards: HLG (hybrid log-gamma), HLG+, Dolby Vision and HDR10+. The former two are open standards, while Dolby Vision is proprietary.

HDR requires more data than SDR video, which could have a negative impact on streaming services’ ability to deliver the high-quality experience their customers expect. That might limit the extent to which HDR can unseat linear TV as the preferred way to watch sports, but it’s an important first step. This season, Prime Video will also use its analytics-driven Prime Vision alternative feed to drive live data visualizations and create automated real-time highlights. This will be available on both the primary TNF broadcast and on its HDR-supported alternative stream.

Dolby Vision

Unlike static formats, Dolby Vision adapts on a frame-by-frame basis to each display device. It is designed to give consumers the best possible image on their TV, whatever that display might be.

It is built on the same core as HDR10, which makes it easy for content producers to make it work with any standard dynamic range TV. It also allows Dolby Vision-enabled Ultra HD Blu-rays to be played back on devices that only support HDR10.

Most LG, Hisense and Panasonic TVs (no Samsung) now have Dolby Vision IQ screens, while Dell’s XPS 13 OLED, Microsoft Surface Pro 8, and Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro laptops have it as well. You can also play Dolby Vision games on the Xbox Series X and S, with Mass Effect: Andromeda the first game to support it. You can get Dolby Vision video on Netflix and Amazon Prime, too. Dolby Vision is also starting to show up on more mobile phone and tablet apps, including YouTube and Vimeo.
